Activity Description

The village walk in Karongi offers a unique opportunity to experience the rural lifestyle of Rwanda, witness agricultural activities, taste traditional banana beer, and appreciate the scenic beauty of the region. It’s an excellent way to connect with the local culture and gain a deeper understanding of life in rural Rwanda.

Rural Life Experience: The village walk will give you an opportunity to experience rural life in Karongi. You’ll witness the daily activities of the villagers, such as fetching water, tending livestock, and preparing food. You’ll also have the opportunity to interact with the locals, learning about their culture, traditions, and way of life.

Banana Beer Tasting or Making: Banana beer is a traditional Rwandan drink made from fermented bananas. During the village walk, you’ll have a chance to taste this unique beverage and learn about the process of making it. You’ll visit a local brewery where you’ll see how the beer is prepared and have the opportunity to taste different varieties.

Agricultural Activities: Karongi is known for its agriculture, and the village walk provides an opportunity to witness farming activities firsthand. You’ll see farmers working in the fields, planting and harvesting crops, and caring for livestock. You’ll learn about the different crops grown in the region, such as bananas, coffee, cassava, beans,… and how they are cultivated.

Scenic Views: Karongi is situated on the shores of Lake Kivu, providing stunning views of the water and surrounding hills. During the village walk, you’ll have the opportunity to take in the scenery and appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

Local Crafts: The village walk may include a visit to a local market or artisan workshop, where you’ll see local craftspeople at work. You may have the chance to purchase handmade souvenirs or crafts, such as baskets, pottery, or textiles.

About the Organizer

Beyond the Gorillas Experience (BGE) is a tourism company based in vicinity of
Volcanoes National Park (VNP). BGE operates in the whole country but it has the main
offices in Musanze and Gakenke Districts located in the Northern Province/Rwanda.

Beyond the Gorillas Experience has a focus on promoting experiences outside of the national park for the sake of including local communities in tourism and helping visitors to see more and genuine experiences in Rwanda.
